A wonderful 1st edition Association copy inscribed to Marie Peary Stafford (1893-1978), author and daughter of famed polar explorer Robert Peary.
This volume features Peary's bookplate on the front pastedown and McClennan's lengthy inscription on the front endpaper, dated 1936.
The frontispiece is a large, full-color fold-out facsimile of Étienne Verrier's famous 1731 panoramic bird's-eye view of Louisbourg. Verrier was appointed chief engineer of Louisbourg in 1724 , on Île Royale in New France on May 9, 1724, a position he held until the Siege of Louisbourg in 1745.
After the defeat he left Louisbourg on July 14, 1745.
Illustrated with black and white maps and other illustrations. Additional three fold-outs in rear pocket, though not complete with all fold-outs. Blue cloth with titling in gilt to spine. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Mild edge wear. 454pp plus ads. Presents handsomely in a clear, archival mylar dust jacket.
