Published posthumously, Roberts' essay on the Battle of Cowpens was meant to be the kernel from which he would expand a novel around the battle. He died before this could happen and his history of the battle was published as a work of nonfiction.
Daniel Morgan, one of the preeminent American field commanders of the Revolutionary War and the General leading American forces at Cowpens, was instrumental in the battle and his victory directly set in motion events which would ultimately lead to the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown later in 1781.
