A vibrant 1880s account of the history, geography and archeology of nations in the eastern Mediterranean, with observations on Christian, Jewish and Muslim culture. The engravings on steel and wood are from original drawings by Harry Fenn and J. D. Woodward.
Text by eleven renowned British explorers and scholars covering Palestine, Egypt and Arabia. Includes chapters by Mary Eliza Rogers, noted Victorian travel writer who traveled with her brother Thomas of the British diplomatic service and wrote 'Domestic Life in Palestine' published in 1860. Three chapters of observations here by her, including: 'Acre, the Key of Palestine'; Mount Carmel and the River Kishon'; 'Maritime Cities and Plains of Palestine'; Mount Hor and the Cliffs of Edom; and The Convent of St. Catherine.
Quarto. Frontispiece, vignette engraved titles, hundreds of wood engravings throughout the text. Dark brown pebbled morocco with gilt- stamped design to covers and spines, gilt titles. All edges gilt, marbled end papers.
Bindings rubbed at edges. Rippling to cloth covers of both volumes. The engraved plates in both volumes remarkably bright and clean.
