An extremely rare 1861 Confederate newspaper from Wilmington, North Carolina, chock full of early Civil War news.
This August 8, 1861 issue of The Daily Journal features an inside-page report announcing the thanks of Confederate President Jefferson Davis for the conduct of Generals Joseph T. Johnston and P.T Beauregard for their conduct of the overwhelming Confederate victory at Bull Run, the first major conflict of the war.
Inside is an ad for the capture and return of a runaway "negro man named Bill Wanet, now running at large" and offering a $500 reward. He was the property of one Dr. T.B. Carr. The ad also gives a detailed physical description.
Also featured are multiple ads for Confederate deserters, with one offering a $180 reward.
