The Raven

Rutland, Vermont: The Rutland Herald, March, 20 1845. Early Printing. Very Good. Item #900014

One of the earliest printings of 'The Raven', arguably Edgar Allan Poe's most famous and influential poem, this printing was published on March 20, 1845, less than two months after the 1st printing in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845.

Poe sold the poem to The American Review in January, 1845 and it was printed by The Evening Mirror with permission and attributed to Poe. This was the only January, 1845 printing of 'The Raven'.

The American Review printed the poem in its February 4, 1845 issue under the pseudonym 'Quarles', a likely tribute to 17th-century poet, Francis Quarles.

The poem was reprinted in a handful of newspapers and magazines throughout 1845 and was included in his book of poetry, 'The Raven and Other Poems', published in November, 1845.

‘The Raven’ remains the most famous poem
of the 19th century and one of the most influential
poems ever published. This is one of the earliest printings still obtainable. Very good condition with two nickel-sized oxidation spots on the front page, neither affecting the text of the poem. Rare. #1K-023.
