A spectacular WW I-era Eastern Shore political appointment boldly signed by Governor Phillips Lee Goldsborough.

Featuring a gorgeous bronze-colored, richly embossed and detailed Seal of Maryland, this piece documents the appointment of John Scott as a Justice of the Peace in Worcester County, Maryland.

The Goldsboroughs have been one of the Eastern Shore’s, and Maryland’s, most prominent families for centuries, and whose members have held seats in the Continental Congress, the Maryland House of Delegates, both chambers of the U.S. Congress and more.

Phillips Lee Goldsborough, a native of Princess Anne, Somerset County, was responsible for the vast overhaul of the state’s education system, including the purchase of the Maryland Agricultural College, now the University or Maryland.
