1860 ILLUSTRATED newspaper MATHEW BRADY engraving of a BEARDLESS ABRAHAM LINCOLN at the 1860 Republican National Convention

New York: Harper's Weekly Illustrated Newspaper, 1860. 1st Edition. Very Good. Item #900106

1860 ILLUSTRATED newspaper with a large double-page centerfold engraving of the Republican candidates for US President at the Republican national Convention in Chicago.

The poster-like engraving depicts the candidates in vignette and are from MATHEW BRADY portraits, including a BEARDLESS ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Lincoln would be nominated at the convention as a compromise candidate, and images of the 16th President without a beard are much more scarce than with. Lincoln grew the beard shortly into his presidency on the advice of an adolescent girl who thought he'd look more distinguished with facial hair.

This offering includes the entire 16-page May 12, 1860 issue. The engraving measures 22" X 16" and is perfect for framing and display!
