Lewis Evans and His Historic Map of 1755. First Known Document to Show Oil at the Industry's Birthplace

New York: Ethyl Corp, 1953. Evans, Lewis. Quarto. very Good. Item #900117

Beautiful 1953 color printing of Lew Evans' important and iconic map of the Middle Colonies of the British North America at the beginning of the French and Indian War.

Published by the Ethyl Corporation presumably as a gift for employees or clients. The company had ties to the oil industry and latched on to the fact that Evans' map had the word 'petroleum' in the spot where the modern oil industry was born, in present-day western Pennsylvania.

A quality printing, this offering contains not only the map, but also a 23-page staple-bound booklet detailing the history of the map, neatly housed in a folding portfolio which fits into a half leather-bound slipcase with gilt titling on the spine.

The map measures 28 1/4" X 21 1/4" and has creases from the folds as issued. Little wear to map, booklet or portfolio. Slipcase with a few small stains near spine and a touch of rubbing to spine. Light age toning to outer edges.
