Rare 1823 EASTON MARYLAND newspaper Talbot County Slave Auction at Wye Mill

Easton, Maryland: The Republican Star & General Advertiser, 1823. 1st. Folio. Very Good. Item #900900

An incredible piece of Talbot County, Maryland pre-Civil War Black Americana.

This original November 4, 1823 issue of the Republican Star & General Advertiser, was the hometown newspaper, published in Easton, Maryland on the state's beautiful and primarily agricultural Eastern Shore, where slavery was more prevalent than in many other areas of the state.

The large front-page advertisement is for an upcoming sheriff's sale for a Wye Mill plantation called 'Sweet Hope' and 'Church Farm', the auction to be held at the County Courthouse in Easton, the county seat.

Also to be sold were 11 slaves, all mentioned by name.

The slaves are named Tilly, Tom, Isaac, Suckey, Frisbe, Harriot, Truss, Ben, Jenny, Sally, and Irvin. All are referenced as 'boys' and 'girls' and likely of a younger age.

The plantation and slaves were the property of Alexander Hemsley, seized to satisfy outstanding debts of his estate.

This historic piece is in Very Good condition with some mild wear along the centerfold. Disbound.

Overall, a compelling reminder of pre-Civil War chattel slavery history in Easton and Talbot County.
